Private Applicator Certification

Quick Links
Private Applicator – is an applicator who applies restricted-use pesticides by ground application for the purpose of producing an agricultural commodity on property owned or rented by the applicator or the applicator’s employer. Applicants for private applicator certification must successfully complete a specialized training course provided by the University of Tennessee, Extension Service on the proper use of restricted use pesticides. There is a $50 fee for training. Upon completion of training, applicants must submit to the Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA), a copy of the three-part form signed by the extension agent verifying completion of the training course and a payment of $25 should be sent to TDA for a certification card. To attend training please contact your local county extension office.

Pesticide certification runs over a cycle of three years. The current cycle ends for Private Applicators on October 21, 2017. If one became initially certified prior to January 1, 2017, they would have to attend a recertification training session offered by the county extension office or online. If one was initially certified as a private applicator after January 1, 2017 their certification would be valid until June 30, 2020. An on-line course (ExtOL) is also available for individuals as an optional method to obtain private applicator certification. Both fees are required, one for training and the other for issuance of a certification card.
